ouu khatta recipe | elephant apple sweet and sour chutney

Ouu Khatta (ଓଉ ଖଟା) or Ou Tenga is a sweet and sour Chutney made of elephant apple (ouu) Dillenia indica in jaggery. ouu khatta is mostly prepared in households during the festivals. the sweet and sour taste of this khatta incites the hunger within. khatta is best served with rice and dalma.

ouu khatta is one of those recipes. it happened when i went home after Aditya’s birth. winters are usually cozy and making a meal with all in the family involved really makes things special. we made ouu khatta during the hindu karthika month (between Oct and Nov). the meals primarily have rice, habisa dalma and ouu katta. the funda behind this meal is to prepare from the ingredients that primarily originated in India and are grown in the garden :) well now i have a good reason to start gardening :)

ouu khatta recipe | elephant apple sweet and sour chutney

Ingredients

  • ouu - 1
  • jaggery - 1 cup
  • asafoetida or hing - 1 pinch
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • turmeric - 1 tsp
  • curry leaves - handful
  • mustard seeds - 1 tbsp
  • cooking oil - 2 tbsp
  • dry red chilli - 2
  • grated coconut - 3 tbsp (optional)

Instructions

  1. remove the skin and cut the ouu or elephant apple into thin long pieces.
  2. wash it well. put 10-15 ouu pieces in a pressure cooker and add 1 tsp of turmeric and 1 cup water.
  3. close the pressure cooker and leave it on medium flame till 3 whistles. let the pressure subside. then drain the water and keep the ouu aside.
  4. place a kadai on medium flame. once hot, add 2 tbsp oil. now add 2 dry red chillis and 1 tbsp mustrad seeds.
  5. when mustard seeds start to crackle, add a handful of curry leaves and a pinch of hing. saute for 30 secs.
  6. add jaggery and salt and saute till the jaggery turns into a thick paste.
  7. add the ouu pieces and saute for 5-10 mins.
  8. garnish with grated coconut and ouu khatta is ready. dig in :)

Notes

add some more jaggery for more sweet taste.
