masala fish fry recipe | pan fried red spot whiting with Indian spices

when its raining outside and the weather is cold, I crave for crispy pakoras and masala tea. but today fate had other plans, I mean better plans 😉 the red spot whiting fish which we had bought from the markets was still in the freezer. I hinted Sarita to deep fry the fish… aha !! the very thought of the crispy fried fish made me dance.

Sarita had already thought of another recipe by then and my hint just fueled her appetite 😀 the result – masala fish fry recipe.

fish is coated lightly with a mixture of spices and pan fried to make this recipe. this requires much less oil that than used for deep frying. the thin coat of masala is the catch here. the masala fish fry recipe makes the outer crispy with soft inside. and let me tell you a secret, while serving the fish, squeeze little lemon juice on the fish. the whole masala fish fry goes to a higher level :)

masala fish fry recipe | pan fried red spot whiting with Indian spices

Ingredients

  • small fish / red spot whiting - 1/2 kg
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • dry fenugreek / methi leaves - 1 tbsp
  • corn flour - 4 tbsp
  • chili powder - 1 tsp
  • ginger and garlic paste - 1 tbsp
  • cumin seeds powder - 1 tsp
  • coriander seeds powder - 2 tsp
  • lemon juice - 1 tbsp
  • mustard oil - 2 tsp
  • cooking oil - for pan fry

Instructions

  1. clean the small fish and drain excess water.
  2. take the fish in a big bowl and add dry fenugreek leaves, turmeric powder, ginger and garlic paste, cumin seeds powder, coriander seeds powder, salt, mustard oil, corn flour, chili powder and lemon juice. mix all ingredients well and leave aside for 10-15 mins.
  3. add oil to a flat pan on medium flame. spread the oil evenly. once hot, add the fish to the pan and cook for 2-3 mins.
  4. flip the fish and cook for another 2-3 mins.
  5. serve while hot.
